Growth Spells
Growth Spells are an ongoing series of drawings made with experimental rituals, exploring mark-making, organic algorithms, non-machines, gradual processes, self-regulatory practices, time travel, and the opening of portals. Both words in the series title have dual meaning: growth referring to the nature of the drawings as they take shape, as well as personal change and transformation; spell as in a stretch of time, as well as a space of enchantment. Drawings are tool-agnostic; marks are informed by the tool, what has elapsed on the page, and intuitive movement. All marks are valid and all drawings are self-healing. Each drawing is imbued with a time-based memory, and the artist often reports feeling transported to another plane while making a growth spell drawing, as if channeling an otherworldly energy flow.

While at the Winter 2017 Westfjords Art Residency in Þingeyri, Iceland, I created and presented a series of growth spells.
I ran an experimental collaborative version of my growth spell practice at World Wide West 2017, whose themes were Ruin and Take Care. These were the instructions.
